Design Implications of a Workflow-Enabled Computer-Based Documentation System

With proper design, computer-based documentation systems (CBD) can support team-based care and promote workflow efficiency. However, it is unclear what factors to consider in designing an effective workflow-enabled CBD system. In this study, we empirically evaluated how the design of a CBD system, developed for a pediatric cardiology unit, affects clinicians’ work. The results demonstrate that the system facilitated clinical workflow efficiency, primarily due to the design principles of integration and work structuring. Results may inform the future design of CBD systems and other types of heath IT systems.
